Varsity opens Sh 580 million blue economy research facility

The Blue Economy Research Hub at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology is finally ready for utilization.
The Institutions Vice Chancellor, Prof Emily Akuno, said the construction of the research facility was fully funded by the National government.

Prof Akuno urged researchers from Kenya and across the region to utilize the hub for purposes of engaging in research and innovations to create knowledge and improve human lives.
The Blue Economy Research Hub in Siaya County is approximately 20 kilometers from Bondo town.
It has State-of-the-Art laboratories, conference rooms and accommodation facilities.
Prof Akuno disclosed that the facility, which will welcome scientific and social researchers, will also provide molecular research services to boost disease surveillance efforts in the region.
"I am pleased that, today, this facility has been handed over to us to open its door for utilization by researchers. We have a good facility here in a serene environment that researchers from the country and the entire region can make use of to come-up with innovations and technologies that improve lives," said Prof Akuno.
“Our state- of- the- art laboratories are fitted with modern equipment that will conduct molecular research for various health facilities and help the government's surveillance on disease outbreaks," she added.
She called on the State Department of Science Research and Innovation to invest in the facility by providing more equipment to boost its operations.
“Currently the hub is equipped courtesy of JOOST Vlir-IUC project, but we want to call on the State Department of Science Research and Innovation to hold our hands by investing in this facility for it to operate optimally," Akuno said.
