KETRA urges local industries to embrace Global Markets

The Kenya Trade Remedies Agency (KETRA) has called on Kenyan manufacturers and industry players to embrace global market opportunities while taking advantage of trade protection measures to shield local industries from unfair import competition.

Speaking during a meeting with members of the Rotary Club of Nairobi North, KETRA Acting Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer Samuel K. Chemisto (pictured) urged businesses to adopt the “Think Global, Act Local” philosophy, saying it offers a strategic pathway to enhance the competitiveness of Kenyan industries without exposing them to unfair trade practices.

Chemisto said globalization has opened up new opportunities for trade, innovation and economic growth, particularly for countries in the Global South.

However, he cautioned that increased openness to international markets has also intensified competition, leaving domestic manufacturers vulnerable to unfair imports.

“We need to look at how the world is interconnected; it is an opportunity we must harness strategically. However, as we embrace global markets, we must also ensure that Kenyan industries compete on a level playing field,” he said.

He noted that Kenya has established a strong legal and institutional framework to protect local industries affected by unfair import competition through internationally recognized trade remedies administered by KETRA.

The remedies include anti-dumping, countervailing and safeguard measures, which are consistent with the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Chemisto explained that these measures are intended to restore fair competition rather than restrict legitimate international trade.

He encouraged manufacturers and producers to promptly report suspected cases of unfair imports to enable the Agency to investigate and take appropriate action.

“We encourage Kenyan manufacturers and producers to promptly report suspected cases of unfair imports so that appropriate investigations can be undertaken to safeguard our economy and strengthen local industries,” he said.

Chemisto further emphasized that while businesses must remain responsive to global economic trends and changing international trade dynamics, effective protection of local industries requires strong national policies and proactive industry participation.

He said such interventions are essential for protecting investments, preserving jobs and supporting sustainable industrial growth.

The “Think Global, Act Local” concept, popularized by Sony Corporation founder Akio Morita, encourages businesses to compete in international markets while adapting their strategies to local realities and promoting fair and lawful trade practices.
