Some 6,200 households in Kaptarakwa Ward, Keiyo South SubCounty, Elgeyo Marakwet County, are set to gain access to safe, reliable, and sustainable water services following the official site handover of the Chemwabul Dam Water Supply Project to the contractor by the North Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency (NRVWWDA).
The site handover ceremony, held at Kaptarkok Primary School, brought together national government administrative officers, county leaders, and residents, marking the beginning of a major water infrastructure project expected to transform livelihoods across the area.
The project will serve residents of Kipchagan, Kamugo , Milimani , Kaptere, Rokocho, and Kaptarakwa villages, in addition to several public institutions that have long faced challenges in accessing clean water.
Speaking during the ceremony, NRVWWDA General Manager for Infrastructure Development, Eng. Jimmy Kemboi, said the project is part of the agency’s broader strategy to support the government’s development agenda through investments in critical water infrastructure.
“Access to clean and reliable water is a fundamental driver of socio-economic development. This project demonstrates our commitment to improving the quality of life of our people through sustainable water solutions,” said Eng. Kemboi.
He noted that the project will not only enhance water accessibility, but also stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities during implementation and support key sectors such as agriculture, education and health.
“The North Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency remains committed to implementing strategic projects that improve livelihoods and contribute to regional development.
"We are confident that once completed, this project will significantly address water shortages experienced by residents of Kaptarakwa and surrounding areas,” he added.
Keiyo South MP Gideon Kimaiyo welcomed the project, describing it as a major milestone in addressing the region’s water challenges.
“For many years, our people have struggled to access clean water, forcing families to travel long distances in search of this essential resource.
"The implementation of this project is a significant step towards improving the welfare of our communities and supporting economic activities,” said Kimaiyo.
The legislator urged the contractor to ensure the quality of work and the timely completion of the project, enabling residents to begin enjoying the benefits as soon as possible.
